Bring us your stash

Somebody's spare room becomes somebody else's first quilt. We take almost everything, and almost nothing gets thrown away.

Yes please

  • Fabric — any amount, any type, any age. Offcuts welcome.
  • Wool, yarn, thread, embroidery floss
  • Patterns and sewing books, however old
  • Buttons, zips, elastic, bias binding, trims, ribbon
  • Sewing machines and overlockers, working or not
  • Scissors, rulers, cutting mats, rotary cutters
  • Half-finished projects you're never going back to
  • Craft supplies generally — beads, felt, canvas, hoops
  • Sheets, curtains and doona covers in good nick — they make excellent lining

Sorry, no

  • Anything wet, mouldy or smoky — it contaminates everything near it
  • Clothing, unless it's for the fabric and you've told us
  • Anything that's been in a shed with mice
  • Furniture, other than sewing tables
  • Electrical goods that aren't sewing machines

How to get it to us

  • A bag or two

    Just bring it in to Beenleigh or Moorooka during opening hours. No need to ring.

  • A car boot full

    Still fine at either shop, but ring first so someone can help you carry it in.

  • A whole room

    Meadowbrook warehouse, by appointment. Estates, downsizes, shop closures — we've done all of them.

What happens to it

It comes to Meadowbrook or goes straight into the back room. Volunteers sort it, and anything the charity can sew with is set aside first — that’s blankets, wheelchair bags, g-tube pads, comfort items, all made free and given free to people who need them.

What’s left goes into the shops at op shop prices, and the money keeps the rooms open. Fabric too damaged for either becomes stuffing or cleaning rags. Almost nothing goes in a bin.

If it mattered to someone

A lot of what we get comes from an estate, and people worry about where it ends up. It ends up being used, by someone who's pleased to have it, and often by someone learning to sew for the first time. If you'd like to know what happened to it, ask — we can usually tell you.

Receipts

We can give you a receipt for a donation of goods. Whether it's deductible depends on your circumstances and we're not accountants — have a word with yours.
